Letting Go

I’ve been trying something with my class, trying to hand over more ownership and responsibility to them. It’s been thought provoking and challenging and humbling and rewarding. I started small. Students individually signing up to workshops. This moved into students having a literacy block to plan and run independently. The next step was students planning their own timetable for an afternoon based on one of our current inquiries. And finally last week, the students planned their own timetable for an afternoon based on something that sparks their interest. We spent the week using classroom learning to provoke thinking and create a list of potential questions to investigate, which helped to guide the sessions. The Power of Modelling

Hello blogging world! We said we would and here we are... Recently, we have been looking at our ‘guided reading’ reading programme and reminding ourselves about, how we believe children really learn. What process do we believe in? How can we engage them? We know that by giving them agency, we empower them! We know that through modelling, we engage them and encourage them to look deeper! So our lessons really should reflect this. So today we did just that! We decided we would model, analysing a text. We had the split screen up: ‘How do we know how characters are feeling or what they are thinking?’ while also thinking about, ‘How analysing texts helps us?’ Throughout our mentor text ‘Fox, By Margaret Wild’ we modelled stopping and thinking, asking questions, communicating with a partner, sharing ideas and finding emotions by reading between the lines. Do you ever have niggles or nudges as a teacher but sometimes you don't know where to go with them? Or dare we say it, even bother to take action?! ARGH! She is one of those teachers who has i ncredible ideas and connections to her class but not the desire to brag (so we will do it for her) Lauren - After a gentle 5 year break and 2 children later, Lauren is back in the hot seat and r eady to take that leap back into education.
